QUESTION? What do scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and uneven skin have in common?
ANSWER: A lack of collagen! If your body would produce more collagen then you wouldn’t get them. Using a Scientia Derma Roller offers nature a helping hand by encouraging collagen production in the skin, which helps prevent or reverse their formation.
What is the Derma Roller?
The Derma Roller (or skin roller) has the features of a precision engineered medical instrument, with the ease of use necessary to use this in the comfort and privacy of your own home. It is based upon a simple hand held roller which has 192 surgical steel micro-needles which are able to part the pores of the top layer of the skin without damaging it. The pores close again around an hour later, but during that time, your skin is significantly better able to absorb and benefit from skin creams and lotions.
The picture below shows a magnified view of the device. The needles are only 1 millimetre long so all you feel is a tickling sensation when the DermaRoller is used.
How does the Derma Roller Work?
As you roll the skin roller over your skin, it creates pin point punctures into the dermis – the majority of which are simply pushing your pores open temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. The human body reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process, but usually it will only heal as far as it must to keep you healthy – which is different to healing to a cosmetic level. By persistently triggering the healing process, you encourage your body to continue healing until the job is finished.
Your body normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are OK, but with the gentle daily reminder caused by the Derma Roller the body is tricked into continuing the healing process until the body has also healed itself on a cosmetic level. This process of skin remodelling can go on for months after each Derma Roller treatment, but noticeable results can be seen within a week! Your skin naturally renews itself every 40 days, so with a little stimulation changes can be dramatic and fast.
Skin micro-needling with the Derma Roller may be carried out safely on all types of skin and all skin colours. Other treatments often have to avoid Sensitive areas – such as around the eyes, the neck and the backs of the hands, but the Derma Roller can be used on all of these areas. The epidermis and melanocytes in the basal area are not damaged, so there’s no possibility of post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.
How fast does the Derma Roller get results?
Of course, the speed at which you will get results depends on what you are treating and how extensively your body needs to remodel the affected area. This process of skin remodelling can go on for months after each Derma Roller treatment, but noticeable results can be seen within a week! Your skin naturally renews itself every 40 days, so with a little stimulation changes can be dramatic and fast.
Does the skin rolling process hurt? or make you bleed?
There are two methods of Derma Rolling. One version involves the use of cream to numb the area, followed by more aggressive use of the Derma Roller once per week. The second alternative, involves using the device with slight pressure up to 5 times per week. Using the device gently gives a tickling feeling and is not painful – although your face is more sensitive to it than your body.
Neither method should draw blood. You may find a temporary reddening of the skin for an hour or so after treatment and it can give a sensation similar to mild sunburn. We recommend the use of sunscreen / block after use.

Can the Derma Roller remove wrinkles?
The Derma Roller can be used to treat deep wrinkles, fine wrinkles, skin creases and lines such as crows feet, smile lines (or laughter lines), creases in the skin of the forehead (scowl lines), around the mouth, on the neck and jaw line (including jowl lines), the decolletes (chest), the backs of the hands and more.
Derma Rollers for Stretch Marks
Stretch mark removal is just one of the many benefits associated with the use of the Derma Roller. Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched suddenly. The outer layer of skin isn’t affected, but the dermis becomes thinner and develops tiny tears. The blood vessels that lie under the skin show through, giving the marks a reddish colour. Later, when the blood vessels contract, the purplish colour fades to silvery white.
The most common causes of stretch marks are pregnancy (between 75% and 90% of women develop stretch marks during pregnancy), adolescent growth spurts, rapid muscle growth and weight loss or gain.
The process of removing stretch marks or treating stretch marks happens as the Derma Roller stimulates the production of new collagen fibres and elastin in the skin. The stretch marks fill in, the skin thickens, tightens and elasticity is restored. The rate at which stretch marks removal can be achieved varies depending on the severity of the case, but noticeable changes can be seen in as little as a week with dramatic results in a month or less.
